MEET IPO
Everyone meet Miss. Ipo. This cute little Chiwawa Cross came through training several years ago. Ipo is back for some special one on one time with Monique & the pooches to deal with some of her aggression issues towards dogs, which started after she was attacked by a bigger dog. This cutie pie needs tons of work on her confidence, and needs some reminders on manners with other pooches!
Ipo is a sensitive girl, who comes across like she is a big tough monster! Just ask her;) The world is a VERY big place from one foot off the ground! and combine that with dogs that like to rush small pooches... and it can be a recipe for disaster.
This little girl feels the need to protect her little 'sister' Sprocket and her mommy! When she is out and about and she hears something, you can't get her attention...even if you are jumping up and down like a crazy person. She is on the 'watch' for something that maybe lurking in the bushes, creeping on the ground, flying in the sky, and running from across the park. This is defiantly something that we need to work on. We need this little girl to 'un-zone' when she is distracted and look to her guardian for support, guidance and protection from big and scary situations.
Session 1 of 3
(Monday, Jan. 20th 2014)
Today we went to Ipo's home and chit chatted with her mommy, and we got a little insight on the relationship between Sprocket and Ipo. Sprocket is Ipo's little shadow, she mimics almost every behaviour that Ipo does...and she has very low confidence. You can tell that Miss Ipo feels the need to protect her sensitive sister, and protect her from big horrible things- which is pretty much everything. Combine this with low confidence herself, and being attacked/bit by another big dog... and it explains a lot. If she doesn't act mean and scary... it COULD happen again. Which is a scary thing for a little one.
We took Ipo to the dog park with Kona & Yoko. Ipo has known them since she was a little puppy. Once Ipo realized who they were, she wouldn't stop kissing them and bouncing around like a bouncy ball. She LOVES LOVES LOVES them.
We put Ipo into a few 'uncomfortable' situations with some stable, well behaved dogs.... it helped a TON that Kona & Yoko were there to show her that its not such a big deal. Ipo either ran away or hid behind us when a new dog approached her, but when they turned to walk away she was running up to catch a sniff. She was curious, but not 100% sure about the face to face stuff. This will be something we defiantly want to work on! But we were SO PROUD of her for not snapping at them. She needs a ton of reassurance to show her that she is doing a good job... but that is something we are happy to help her with.
Our goal will be to do drills to 'up' her confidence, socialize her and start to desensitize her to other well behaved/stable dogs, teach her that if she is uncomfortable to look to her guardian for reassurance and protection, teach her to 'un-zone' when distracted and solidify her recalls.
We can't wait to see this little ones progress! We know she will do great!

Session 2 of 3
Session 2 of 3
(Monday, January. 27th 2014)
Oh Little Ipo! We just adore your cuteness! Today Ipo seemed a little "off" and we couldn't figure out what was going on with her. Today was a bit different because her mommy sent her with a jacket! We kept wondering why she didn't run around and be her cute little Ipo self... eventually we wondered if it was the jacket she was wearing. The second we took off the jacket she got a light in her eye, and ripped around like a mad woman. LOL. If ONLY dogs could talk.
Today we were really lucky! We had several big dogs in the "pack" to desensitize Ipo too! There was Kona, Yoko, Cabella, Teddy, Ty, Aspen, and Little. Not only are they all bigger dogs, they all have a ton of energy. It was great to see Ipo weave between them. When new dogs came up to visit, they didn't seem so scary anymore!
Even know Ipo did not instigate play with other dogs today, she was social with all of them with no snapping! When Ipo was uncomfortable she turned the other way, or came walking towards us. This is EXACTLY what we want this pretty girl to do! Our original goal was to teach her to look to other stable dogs and people for support and protection if need be...and not take manners into her own hands! and she did amazing!
We can't wait till next week, and don't worry Ipo... we won't put your jacket on. ;)

Session 3 of 3
(Monday, February.3rd 2014)
Ipo... you continue to show us how amazing you are. Today Ipo was surrounded by a large group of high energy dogs and she was VERY well behaved. Again, she did not snap at one dog, and when she was uncomfortable she either removed her self from the situation or looked to us for some guidance. There was a couple times that she just stood there because she wasn't quite sure what she should do... This is going to be something Ipo's Mommy will have to keep an eye out for. It will be very important to help Ipo un-zone, and have an 'out' when she is 'stuck' and does not know what to do next.
Little Miss Ipo even did a few play bows, and had a couple bouts of the 'zoomies' to try and get a few bigger dogs to play with her. This was SO good to see! She even shared her special kisses ;) with a few other dogs, besides Kona and Yoko!
Ipo LOVES to do a good job! and she LOVES to have fun! So doing a bit of obedience, and LOTS of confidence boosting drills we be key to keeping the smile on this girls face! It has nothing to do with her being 'obedient' it has to do with giving her a job to do... so it up's her confidence...and having fun with her.
We can't wait to hear about this beautiful girls progress!!!
